The Ultimate Universe
The Ultimate universe is an imprint of Marvel comics that takes place in an alternate reality from most other Marvel comics (the "main Marvel universe", MU, or "616"). There are four ongoing titles in the UU, as it is popularly called.
The Ultimates are the premiere super-team of the UU. Their title is split into volumes, referred to as The Ultimates, Ultimates 2, and Ultimates 3 (still ongoing). Ultimates 1 and 2 were created by the team of Millar and Hitch and are arguably regarded as the greatest creations of the UU, despite being delayed for months at a time. These first two volumes are immensely popular among the members of UC. This is why Ultimates 3 is almost universally loathed. The new creative team took all the team members in new, lame directions. For example, the cool, original Ultimate Thor became a pathetic clone of 616 Thor, only without his own title and J. Michael Straczynski giving him an interesting supporting cast and good writing.
Ultimate Spider-Man was originally as loved as Ultimates 1 and 2. Its writer, Brian Michael Bendis, was the golden boy of every comics fan. Everyone was amazed at how quickly Bagley, the artist, put out new issues. But as time went on and issues stacked up, people began to question Bendis. They started to notice how every character talked the same. They started to notice how many of Bagley's characters looked exactly the same. They started to notice how completely ridiculous many plot twists were. Bendis reproduced the unpopular Clone Saga in the Ultimate universe and it was bad. He made Mary Jane turn into a stupid-looking, gigantic, red, furry monster and Gwen Stacy turned into Carnage (or the other way around). If you ever hear members referencing a Mary Jane Goblin, Furry Goblin, or Gwarnage, this is what they are referring to. Recently, USM experienced an upswing in popularity, with Bendis seemingly returning to the roots of the series and Bagley replaced by Stuart Immonen, but it's not clear whether or not this will last.
Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four have been discussed in UC, but were never as popular or controversial as the Ultimates or Ultimate Spider-Man. Ultimate X-Men writer Robert Kirkman is a member on the site and has both posted reponses to Ultimate X-Men questions and voted in a speculation poll concerning upcoming Ultimate X-Men issues.
The minseries that have been created in the UU have been very much hit or miss in the eyes of the UC, with the Ultimate Galactus Trilogy having its ups and downs, Ultimate Human currently being fairly good, and finally there was Ultimate Power, and Ultimate Iron Man. Both of these titles were almost universally reviled by the board, Power being very much a jumble of fights and little or no plot, and Ultimate Iron Man becoming infested with nanomonkeys and BAD writing.
